Variables

Social Explorer has over 20,000 variables from more than two centuries of American and global datasets.  We offer variables direct from the Census Bureau, as well as computed variables to help you get the information you need.  You will see our own variables marked as "Social Explorer" or "SE" tables.

For example, if you want to look at information about age for Census 2010, Social Explorer offers unique tables that show cumulative age brackets, instead of the raw numbers.

Or, if you want to look at information about educational attainment for the American Community Survey 2010-14, the Census reports how many people earned masters degrees, doctoral degrees, bachelors degrees, etc.  Social Explorer also lets you examine the data in terms of people who earned a bachelors degree or more, a cumulative table that better answers questions about how educated the population is.

While the detail and display may vary, all tables rely on numbers from the Census Bureau.  As with any table in our system, click on the table title for more information about the variable, terminology, and computations behind it.
